This topic is hot. And in the past few months it's become very affordable.
My experiments have shown that having a clickable audio clip on your site really
boosts response rates. Right now, there's only two main offerings. Both of
them involve an embedded Flash button on your site. That probably only rules
out about 10% of your visitors. I'll bet that there'll be more alternatives
coming along soon - and I'll keep you informed. Here's what's available:
AudioGenerator:
A neat product. There's two "Unique Selling
Propositions" in this product:
You can make your recordings on a dedicated US hotline.
So your happy customers can record testimonials for you. And you
don't have the hassle of having to make your own recordings. But
it's a bit pricey if you're not located in the USA.
You can set the embedded play-back mechanism to
auto-play when visitors hit on your site. And the 'site' could
be an 'audio postcard'; you email the URL to prospects and the
resultant 'website' looks like a post card. Bit of a gimmick, but
it's a nice touch.
The downside of AudioGenerator is that it's a monthly
subscription - a touch under $30 US a month. So you keep on paying.
When you stop, so does your website audio. But, if you're really
committed to website audio and the two features above appeal
to you, then AudioGenerator is for you.
The initial attraction of Sonic Memo for me
was that it is a one-time purchase. It's a software product that
very quickly and simply produces the play buttons that sit on your
website. You have to make your own recordings (not too difficult
- see below), but when you've uploaded them to your website, Sonic
Memo produces a few lines of code that you embed in your webpage.
Jay Jennings, Sonic Memo's creator, tells me that he's
working on version 2, which, amongst other things, will have a wider
choice of buttons. He promises free lifetime upgrades, so you'll
always be able to use the latest version.
If you prefer to pay only once and you want
to have full control over the files and you are prepared to
put a little effort in to making your own recordings, then I suggest
you look closely at Sonic Memo. At $97 US it's very affordable.
If you're going to produce your own audio files
(and I recommend that you try this - you'll get far better results,
and you can mix some audio in as well), then Acoustica's software
is what I recommend. I looked at a few other offerings. Some were
highly expensive and complicated. Others didn't give me enough
flexibility.
Acoustica's MP3 Audio Mixer was ideal.
Now remember, I had never produced any website audio before, and
I certainly never mixed any music. But half an hour after downloading
Acoustica's software, I'd produced my first effort, using a cheap
microphone that I found lying around. Mind you, it took several more
takes to eliminate the "errs" from my delivery! And I found
a great source of "music loops" (short bits of music that
you can repeat over and again) from WickedWavs.com -
I bought half a dozen for a total of $25 US.
OK, if you really want to lash out and
have an incredibly powerful audio mixing product, then have a look
at Sound
Forge. It costs around $400 US! But Acoustica costs just $24.95
US, and it's great value for the money. I recommend Acoustica.
If, like me, you are new to producing website
audio, you are going to look round for advice. I followed the advice
of Sonic Memo's Jay Jennings (a very colourful and charismatic
character!) and invested in Audio C4.
What's this? It's an eBook - packed full
of great help and advice. At least, that's what I thought that I
was buying. But it turned out that I'd bought a whole lot more in
the shape of author Paul Evan's private Members Site. And one of
the many gems here is multimedia online video guide to using Acoustica's
MP3 Audio Mixer, which was even better than Acoustica's own help
files. And there's more bonuses in the Audio C4 Members Site.
But, back to the eBook. I thought that
I was going to get a technical guide to audio. Not so. Paul's book
(in PDF format) takes you step by step through the marketing processes
needed to produce winning website audio. And that's where the "C4" comes
in - standing for Content, Connection, Confidence and Cash. And yes,
he does tell you, in simple terms, how to make your audio sound great.
For just $29.95 US, Audio C4 is a good
value investment, which will enable you to produce website audio
clips that really will have profit-pulling potential.
Here's what I invested in my steps towards producing
my first website audio clips. And this outlay was a one-off payment;
I decided not to go down the monthly fee route (although
this approach might be more appropriate to your needs).
If your budget is really tight,
what's the minimum you need. I guess (if you've already got an old
microphone somewhere) you could get away with Sonic
Memo + Acoustica for
about $122. Well just with Sonic
Memo, actually, because there are some (poor) freebies that convert
.wav files (which is what Windows in-built software produces) to
.mp3 files (which Sonic
Memo needs).
And then, of course, there's the $30 US
per month option that Audio
Generator offers. That's a low-risk trial option; pay for a month,
then cancel if you don't like it.
So, that's it from the Marketing
Tipster on website audio. I'll be updating this page as often
as there are new developments.
